Someone asked me if I had ever tried making sculpted prints without any borders, to emphasize their sculpture-ness. For my first few sculpted prints, I did indeed shape the board on which the folded paper was mounted (a few examples: 1, 2, 3). But more recently, I used borderless sculpted prints in a large mobile, seen below, that was part of my Sculpted Lines installation (with Jessica Warner). Here, I was interested in carving out irregular, fractal-like outlines for the mobile pieces that would shift and overlap as they moved around. One comment I got on this mobile is that, unlike Calder-style mobiles, it stimulates (or agitates) the eye because it's harder to comprehend all at once. I'll take that as a compliment.
